It's the Year of the Pig

Yay. 2019 is my year: the Year of the Pig. To celebrate we whizzed up to Adelaide for the Chinese Lunar New Year festival. It was a fairly low-key event, with a handful of stalls, a bit of entertainment and lots of red everywhere.

A red flag dance
We stopped to listen to a group of young girls playing traditional Chinese music.
Concentration aplenty from these musicians.
I loved the costumed man who roamed the area. Everyone wanted to have their photo taken with him.

In a side street we spotted two dragons ... or were they lions?

Strolling further we came to the main stage where furious drumming heralded the arrival of the Lion Dance. This was spectacular, amusing and very theatrical.
 Here they come.
There were six dragons in all, resplendent in garish colours and decorations.

A 'lion keeper' kept them in line and gave directions for them to follow.
At one stage, two lions roamed around the other four who lay down. Every so often they would rear up as in this next photo.
But the climax of the show was when the person in the 'head' of the dragon stood on the shoulders of the person in the 'back' of the dragon with the crowd cheering the dragon on as it progressively got taller and taller.

By now we were pretty hungry so popped into the food hall for some delicious Chinese food.

May the Year of the Pig be a good one.

  1. Fabulous! I've never done that. Was it in the China Town area near the Central Market? Looks and sounds like it to me. Did you drive in or catch the train?
    Happy Year of the Pig.
And may we pigout together very soon.
